Work Packages

WP1

Work Package 1 concerns the strengthening of the infrastructure backbone. This includes the development of six new 4th generation biobanks hosting MSCs, EPCs, iPSCs, biofluids for extracellular vesicles, microbiomes and organoids and the improvement of quality pursuing ISO 20387 accreditation to increase reliability and competence in biobanking processesof all BBMRI.it biobanks, strengthening trust and interoperability in research and clinical applications.
WP leader: Prof. Monica Forni
WP2

Work Package 2 concerns the empowering of the Common Service Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (CS-ELSI) with the development of digital tools (the Community of Practices, and the Open access digital Knowledge Base platforms) and the APP for dynamic digital informed consent integrated to e-health record.
WP leader: Prof. Marialuisa Lavitrano
WP manager: Dr. Sara Casati
WP3

Work Package 3 focuses on strengthening the Common Service Information Technology (CS-IT) of BBMRI.it to provide researchers advanced digital tools and services. Key initiatives include the deployment of an new helpdesk platform to efficiently manage user requests and support, the creation of an online marketplace showcasing the wide range of on-demand services offered by the National Node, and a robust monitoring system to track key performance indicators (KPIs) of the research infrastructure. Additionally, a dedicated data analysis platform supporting AI will empower researchers to process and interpret complex datasets driving innovation in translational research and precision medicine
WP leader: Dr. Andrea Manconi
WP4

WP4 focuses on enabling the transition of BBMRI.it biobanks towards FAIR data standards, improving interoperability, research reproducibility, and data maturity. It establishes a centralized Data Team of Data Engineers and Data Quality Managers to support biobanks in implementing standardized data formats, training staff, and classifying biobanks by data maturity tiers. Activities include defining minimal and extended datasets for clinical and multi-omics data, implementing Extract/Load/Transform protocols, and mapping standards for high-throughput -omics readouts. Selected biobanks will also pilot decentralized storage and small computing nodes to manage and FAIRify critical datasets, enabling federated search and better support for translational research and patient care.
WP leader: Prof. Mario De Felice
WP manager: Dr. Matteo Pallocca
WP5

WP5 provides researchers with access to BBMRI.it resources, including biobank samples/data and core facility services, through Transnational Access (TNA). It develops and manages regular TNA calls for routine access, use cases, service chain demonstrations, and training for young scientists. An independent Scientific Review Board evaluates proposals based on excellence, impact, and implementation quality, while the service portfolio is periodically updated to integrate emerging technologies and support precision medicine.
WP leaders: Prof. Aldo Scarpa,
WP manager: Dr. Rita Lawlor
WP6

WP6 focuses on overall project management, coordination, and governance. It ensures the implementation of the annual activity plan, harmonizes scientific exchange among partners, manages finances, and monitors adherence to regulations. WP6 implements risk management, monitors intermediate objectives, oversees reporting, and ensures quality and timely delivery of all project activities. It also supports BBMRI.it by developing a network of Core Facilities strengthening the cooperation with biobanks for the development of advances services.
WP leader: Dr. Angela Celetti
Scientific Coordinator: Dr. Claudia Miele
